Eighth Anniversary of Beloved Community Church - June 22nd.
Nancy Sales - New Moderator of the Alabama-Tennessee Association of the United Chruch of Christ: The Alabama-Tennessee Association held its Annual Meeting in Montgomery, AL, April 13-14, hosted by Community Congregational UCC. The theme “Ready, Set, Grow” was developed through the offering of a workshop led by Huntsville, Alabama leaders on effective advertising for a congregation, and by a key note by Cameron Trimble, Associate Conference Minister for Church Development, in which she encouraged churches to take risks to extend their ministries. The Conference also distributed demographic information on each congregation in the Association to assist them with planning their outreach. The Association elected a slate of officers, including their new moderator Nancy Sales, a member of Beloved Community UCC and First Congregational Christian UCC of Birmingham.
Phoebe Wabara - On Sunday, April 27 at 6 pm, Phoebe Wabara, from Rwanda, spoke at Beloved Community Church. Her talk was very moving as she recounted some of the atrocities that have occurred in her homeland. Truly, the strength given to her to endure comes from God. After church services, she spoke to many of us about more of her personal experiences. Phoebe Wabara is the co-founder of the Christian-Cultural Awareness and Assistance League (C-CAAL). The Wabara's saw a need for people of various races and ethnic backgrounds to come together and dialogue on the Christian idea of human community. Since the organizations's founding in 2000, C-CAAL has established a foothold in the community and has held seminars on the theme of social harmony and reconciliation at various churches and universities. C-CAAL has assisted people, especially children, rebuild their socio-economic life in countries affected the ethnic violence such as Rwanda. Other goals of C-CAAL include:
- Empowering those affected by war to rebuild their lives by teaching work, life skills and tecnology.
- Organizing cultural and travel opportunities to promote intra-cultural awareness.
- Discovering and experiencing indigenous ways of life.
