justice...

“And what does the Lord require but to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)

Doing justice, seeking peace and building community are central to the identity of the United Church of Christ (UCC). Throughout its history – from early engagement in the movement to abolish slavery to modern campaigns for civil rights and social justice – the UCC in every setting of the church has been engaged in ministries of compassion, advocacy and reconciliation. While there is a deep respect in the UCC for the right of every individual member to form his or her own views on these issues, there has always been a recognizable passion across our church to “make things right.” – as a testament to our faith in God, our hope for the future, our love for God’s creation.  In this way we seek to apply the commandment of Jesus Christ to love our neighbors as ourselves.

Bread for the World. Beloved Community Church is in a Covenant Church relationship with Bread for the World. Bread for the World is a nationwide Christian movement that seeks justice for the world’s hungry people by lobbying our nations’ decision makers. Bread for the World provides tools that will equip churches to learn more about hunger, pray for hungry people and take action to end hunger through advocacy.

Arise Citizens’ Policy Project (ACPP). Beloved Community Church is a faith-based member of the Arise Citizens’ Policy Project. ACPP analyzes policies and educates its members on poverty issues.

Greater Birmingham Ministries (GBM). Beloved Community Church is a sponsor of GBM. GBM is an ecumenical and interfaith organization that seeks a faith-based response to poverty by meeting people’s emergency needs while also pursuing social and economic justice for all people.

Our nation’s decision makers must hear the following warning: “Woe to unjust judges and to those who issue unfair laws, says the Lord, so that there is no justice for the poor, the widow and orphans.” Just as important, we as Christians must heed God’s call: “Son of man, I have appointed you a watchman . . .; whenever you hear a word from My mouth, warn them from Me.”
