Rev. Jennifer Sanders is the pastor of Beloved Community Church. Jennifer has a heart for people and for the Gospel and brings a liberation theology framework to ministry at Beloved. She has been working at the intersections of public theology, social justice advocacy, creative expression, pastoral care and conversation to explore how we find and express the sacred in everyday life.
Before entering the ministry, Jennifer worked in refugee resettlement, Medicaid outreach, botanical education, and occupational therapy for people with disabilities and acute illnesses. She has a Master of Divinity (MDiv) from Chicago Theological Seminary. Prior to becoming the pastor of Beloved in 2016, Jennifer developed an innovative approach to community ministry called What the Heart Holds: A Ministry of Manifest Concern for All Creation.
Jennifer lives with her partner, teenage daughter, five dogs, a turtle, and a frog in Birmingham. In her free time, she enjoys camping, kayaking, reading, and traveling. You will often find Jennifer drinking coffee and engaged in deep conversations with people of all ages.

LeNard Brown is one of the founding members of Beloved and of The Controllers, a soul and R&B group that was formed in the 1970s. The Controllers performed on Soul Train five times, scored multiple gold records, and charted numerous top 10 hits. They opened for stars including Ray Charles, B.B. King, Nancy Wilson and the Temptations, opened for Anita Baker at Radio City Music Hall, and also played at Carnegie Hall.
LeNard always said that if he ever had a church, the music would be something special – not your typical church music. So when Rev. Angie Wright and LeNard founded Beloved Community Church together in the year 2000, he united some of the best musicians in Birmingham in Beloved’s orchestra. His star quality and music connections bring some of the best guest artists to our church every week.
Nowadays, you can hear LeNard interview some of the most famous soul and R&B artists on his weekly radio show Inside the Juke Joint on 98.7 KISS FM each Saturday morning from 8-10 a.m. You’ll hear LeNard trumpet Beloved on his show, which he calls the most loving and accepting church he’s never known.
LeNard is a native of Fairfield and has lived in the Birmingham area his entire life. His son, LeNard Gerron Brown, lives in San Francisco with his family.
